Distinctions
Chemical composition
304 flange: the main component is 06Cr19Ni10, containing about 18% chromium and 8% nickel, and also contains a small amount of manganese, silicon and other elements.
316 flange: the main component is 0Cr17Ni12Mo2, containing 16% or so of chromium, 10% or so of nickel and 2% - 3% of molybdenum, molybdenum is one of the important differences between it and 304.
Corrosion resistance
304 flanges have good corrosion resistance in atmospheric and freshwater environments, and are also resistant to general acids, alkalis and salts. However, in environments containing a high concentration of chloride ions, such as seawater, salt water, and certain chemical solutions, pitting and crevice corrosion are likely to occur.
316 Flange: The addition of molybdenum element makes its anti-chlorine ion corrosion performance greatly improved. In the strong corrosive environments such as marine engineering, chemical industry, pharmaceutical industry, etc., it can remain stable for a long time, effectively resisting the erosion of chlorine ions, and preventing pitting corrosion and intergranular corrosion.
High temperature resistance
304 flange: can maintain good performance in environments below 800℃, commonly used in general high-temperature environments, such as ordinary heating equipment, industrial furnaces and other piping connections.
316 Flange: can withstand high temperatures of 1200 - 1300℃, better oxidation resistance and stability at high temperatures, suitable for high temperature and corrosive media presence, such as petroleum cracking devices, high temperature chemical reactors and so on.
Strength and hardness
304 flange: high strength and hardness, can withstand a certain pressure and tension, but the tensile strength of 515MPa, yield strength of 205MPa, relative to 316 slightly lower.
316 flange: tensile strength of 590MPa, yield strength of 290MPa, strength and hardness is slightly higher than 304, can better withstand greater pressure, impact and abrasion, more reliable in high-pressure, high-stress working conditions.
Magnetism
304 Flanges: are normally considered non-magnetic, but after cold working, such as cold drawing, cold stamping, etc., a weak magnetism may develop.
316 Flanges: also generally considered non-magnetic, but again after cold working or special treatment, some magnetism may occur, although the magnetism is usually weaker than that of 304 after cold working.
Price
304 Flange: due to its relatively simple alloy composition, low raw material costs and relatively conventional production process, it is relatively cheaper and has a high price/performance ratio in the market.
316 Flange: contains molybdenum, nickel and other precious metals, and the production process requires a higher process, the production cost is also higher, so the price is much higher than 304 Flange.
