Product Description

ASTM A213 Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe TP304/TP316L Bright Annealed Seamless Tube for Heat Exchanger

1.Product Description

This document provides technical basis for the life-cycle operation and maintenance management of stainless steel seamless pipes that have been installed and are in service. Unlike the original mill quality certificates, this version focuses on the performance degradation patterns of pipes under combined loads (high temperature, high pressure, corrosion, fatigue), in-service inspection methods, defect assessment criteria, and remaining life evaluation methodologies. Since seamless pipes have no longitudinal welds, special scanning schemes for weld zones are unnecessary during in-service inspections, resulting in higher inspection coverage and lower misjudgment rates. This makes them particularly suitable for integrity management of critical safety-rated (SIL-2 and above) piping systems.

2. Product Applications

Service Phase Specific Work Content
Within 6 months of first commissioning Establish baseline wall thickness reference (zero baseline for corrosion monitoring via UT thickness measurement)
Routine on-line monitoring Fixed-point thickness gauging (select high-corrosion-risk points, re-measured monthly/quarterly)
Planned turnaround overhaul Full wall thickness scanning + spot PT (penetrant testing) + spot hardness checks
Post-upset event assessment Rapid integrity assessment of affected pipe sections after over-temperature/over-pressure/water hammer events
Pre-life-extension evaluation Recalculate remaining design life based on measured minimum wall thickness and current mechanical properties
Replacement decision support Determine whether localized or full replacement is required when thickness falls below the design minimum

3. Product Advantages

  1. Sufficient uniform corrosion allowance: Seamless pipes are manufactured with reserved corrosion allowance (typically 1.0~3.0mm, depending on media corrosivity) per design codes. The absence of localized accelerated corrosion risks in weld zones ensures predictable and uniform wall thinning rates, facilitating precise maintenance and replacement scheduling.

  2. Minimal NDT signal interference: No acoustic interference from coarse-grained weld zones or HAZ structural inhomogeneities. Ultrasonic attenuation coefficients remain stable along the pipe body, yielding thickness measurement repeatability of ≤±0.05mm with high confidence in results.

  3. Clear defect tolerance limits: Critical sizes for volumetric defects (e.g., pitting, erosion) in seamless pipes can be precisely assessed per API 579 / ASME FFS-1 without overly conservative premature replacement due to weld joint coefficient reductions.

  4. Repairability and re-manufacturing friendliness: Localized wear or corrosion thinning can be restored via weld overlay cladding or repair sleeve installation. The seamless pipe's excellent roundness ensures high sleeve fitment, with repair strength recovering to ≥95% of original design values.

  5. Simplified record management: A single pipe section can reach over 12m in length with no weld interruptions. Fixed-position thickness monitoring points can be permanently marked, enabling strong data comparability over long-term tracking and significantly reducing data analysis and trend prediction workloads.

4.Key Product Parameters

Assessment Item Operational Reference / Execution Basis
Minimum allowable wall thickness (in-service) Back-calculated per design formula: t_min = (P·D)/(2·S·E + 2·P·Y) + consumed corrosion allowance limit
Reference uniform corrosion rate (304/316, neutral water) 0.01 ~ 0.05 mm/year (adjust based on actual media)
Pitting/local thinning depth limit (unrepaired) ≤ 40% of nominal wall thickness (API 579 Level 1)
UT thickness inspection frequency General lines: once/year; high-risk (Cl⁻/H₂S): once/six months; SHC-2 rated: once/quarter
Thickness measurement point density Straight sections: 1 cross-section per 3 meters, 4 azimuths per section (0°, 90°, 180°, 270°); elbows/tees: densified to 1 section per meter
On-site hardness limit (post-service austenitic) Base metal hardness increase >30 HB above as-delivered value indicates σ-phase embrittlement risk; metallographic verification required
Hydrostatic retest pressure (in-service) 1.25 × MAWP (Maximum Allowable Working Pressure), hold ≥15 minutes, acceptance: no leakage
Leak-tightness acceptance standard Helium leak test ≤ 1×10⁻⁵ Pa·m³/s (vacuum service); soap solution: no continuous bubbles (atmospheric service)
Vibration velocity limit (RMS, power frequency) New lines ≤ 10mm/s; In-service lines ≤ 15mm/s; >25mm/s requires immediate shutdown
Simplified remaining life estimation R_L = (t_actual - t_min) / corrosion rate (years), with 50% safety factor applied as recommended replacement horizon
Inspection report retention period Minimum 15 years (statutory requirement for pressure piping) or project-specified full life-cycle duration
