The Solution Annealed Corrosion Resistant Stainless Steel Butt Weld Tee is precision-engineered from ASTM A403 Grade WP316L stainless steel, featuring a complete solution annealing heat treatment process. This critical thermal processing dissolves chromium carbides precipitated at grain boundaries, restoring full intergranular corrosion resistance.
The WP316L low-carbon grade with 2.0-3.0% molybdenum content provides superior pitting resistance in chloride environments, making this butt weld tee ideal for chemical processing, marine, and pharmaceutical applications where both mechanical integrity and corrosion resistance are paramount.
Each fitting undergoes solution annealing at 1040-1120°C followed by rapid quenching to lock the homogeneous austenitic microstructure. The result is a tee fitting with enhanced ductility, stress corrosion cracking resistance, and consistent performance across the weld zone and parent metal.

- Superior Intergranular Corrosion Resistance: Solution annealing eliminates chromium carbide precipitation at grain boundaries, ensuring the tee maintains corrosion resistance after welding without post-weld heat treatment
- Excellent Chloride Pitting Resistance: Molybdenum-enhanced WP316L composition provides PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) ≥24, suitable for coastal and offshore environments
- Chemical Processing Industry: Ideal for handling acetic acid, phosphoric acid, sulfuric acid (dilute), and various organic compounds in chemical plants and pharmaceutical facilities
- Marine & Offshore Engineering: Resistant to seawater corrosion, suitable for shipbuilding piping systems, desalination plants, and offshore platform fluid transport
- Food & Beverage Processing: Meets hygienic requirements for dairy, brewery, and food-grade piping networks requiring both corrosion resistance and cleanability
- Petrochemical Refineries: Suitable for process piping in refinery units handling sour service conditions and corrosive hydrocarbon streams
Solution annealing is a critical heat treatment process where the WP316L stainless steel tee is heated to 1040-1120°C and held at temperature to fully dissolve chromium carbides into solid solution, then rapidly quenched. This process restores optimal intergranular corrosion resistance by preventing chromium depletion at grain boundaries that occurs during welding or hot forming.
Without solution annealing, sensitized stainless steel tees become susceptible to intergranular attack in corrosive environments, particularly after welding. Our solution annealed corrosion resistant stainless steel butt weld tee ensures consistent corrosion protection throughout the entire fitting, including heat-affected zones.
The solution annealed WP316L stainless steel butt weld tee offers significantly enhanced pitting and crevice corrosion resistance compared to WP304L, primarily due to the 2.0-3.0% molybdenum addition. In chloride-containing environments such as seawater, coastal atmospheres, and chemical processes involving halides, WP316L demonstrates PREN values of 24-26 versus 18-20 for WP304L.
This makes the solution annealed WP316L tee the preferred choice for marine, offshore, and chemical processing applications where chloride-induced corrosion is a concern. The solution annealing heat treatment further enhances this corrosion resistance by ensuring a homogeneous austenitic microstructure free of detrimental phases.
For ASTM A403 WP316L solution annealed stainless steel butt weld tee fittings in most applications, post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) is not required. The low carbon content (≤0.03%) combined with the solution annealed condition minimizes the risk of sensitization during welding.
However, for severe corrosive service conditions or when specified by engineering standards, a post-weld solution anneal may be recommended. The solution annealed condition of the base tee fitting ensures that even if some carbide precipitation occurs in the narrow heat-affected zone during welding, the bulk fitting retains its corrosion-resistant properties. We recommend consulting applicable engineering codes such as ASME B31.3 for specific post-weld treatment requirements.
