ASTM A790 S32205 Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Seamless Pipe High Strength Corrosion Resistance
1. Product Description
Duplex stainless steel pipe is a type of stainless steel pipe featuring a dual-phase microstructure composed of approximately equal proportions of austenite (γ) and ferrite (α) phases. This unique two-phase structure combines the characteristics of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steels, delivering an optimal balance of high strength and excellent corrosion resistance. Typically, the chromium content ranges from 18% to 28% and nickel content from 3% to 10%, with low carbon content. Some grades also contain alloying elements such as molybdenum, copper, niobium, titanium, and nitrogen to enhance specific properties.
Common duplex grades include UNS S31803/S32205 (2205), UNS S32750 (2507 Super Duplex), S32760, S32304, and S32101. Duplex pipes are manufactured in both seamless and welded constructions, primarily under ASTM A790 (seamless and welded) and ASTM A789 (general service) specifications.
2. Product Applications
Duplex stainless steel pipes are widely used across industries that demand both high strength and corrosion resistance in aggressive environments:
-
Oil & Gas Industry: Offshore topside and subsea process piping, production facilities, produced water handling, FPSOs, and semi-submersible platforms
-
Chemical & Petrochemical Processing: Pipelines handling organic acids, chloride-containing media, phosphoric acid, and sulfuric acid
-
Marine & Offshore Environments: Seawater systems, desalination plants (reverse osmosis systems), seawater condenser pipes, underwater umbilical cables, and fire fighting systems
-
Pulp & Paper Industry: Bleaching lines and processing equipment
-
Power Generation & Energy: Heat exchanger tubes and high-pressure piping systems
-
Food & Pharmaceutical Industries: Processing equipment requiring high cleanliness and corrosion resistance.
3. Product Advantages
-
Superior Strength: Minimum yield strength of 450 MPa for 2205 duplex vs. 170 MPa for 316L austenitic stainless steel. This allows for thinner wall designs and significant weight reduction—approximately 30% or more compared to 304/316L stainless steel.
-
Excellent Corrosion Resistance: PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) values exceed 35 for 2205 and reach 42+ for Super Duplex 2507, providing outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride stress corrosion cracking.
-
Chloride SCC Resistance: Far superior to 304/316 grades at temperatures up to approximately 250°C.
-
Cost Effectiveness: Lower nickel content makes duplex grades less susceptible to nickel price volatility compared to austenitic grades. Combined with weight reduction, this offers significant economic advantages.
-
Excellent Weldability: Good welding performance with low hot cracking tendency.
-
Long Service Life: Excellent intergranular corrosion resistance ensures extended.
-
Good Fatigue Resistance: Important for cyclic-loading environments such as offshore and subsea applications.
