MSS SP-43 Stainless Steel Stub Ends Short Pattern Lap Joint 316L
1.Product Description
Stainless Steel Stub Ends (also known as lap joint stub ends) are pipe fittings that convert pipe ends into flanged connection faces. They consist of a straight pipe section and a flared lap at one end. The lap face serves as the sealing surface, while the back shoulder bears the fastening load from the lap joint flange. The product does not include a flange and must be paired with Lap Joint Flanges. Materials include 304/304L, 316/316L, duplex stainless steel, and nickel-based alloys. Based on the back contour, they are classified as Type A (straight neck transition), Type B (curved transition), and Type C (forged thickened), suitable for different pressure classes and wall thickness requirements. They offer an economical and flexible connection solution for piping systems.
2.Product Applications
-
Used with Lap Joint Flanges to form complete flanged connection assemblies for various steel piping systems.
-
Corrosive media transmission lines: The stub end contacts the media with stainless steel, while the flange ring can be carbon steel, enabling zoned material selection.
-
Large-diameter piping systems: The independently rotating flange ring solves alignment difficulties where rotating large-diameter pipes is impractical.
-
Pipe sections requiring regular maintenance: Such as pump suction lines, heat exchanger channels, and reactor discharge nozzles that require frequent cleaning.
-
Lines subject to vibration or thermal displacement: The fit clearance dampens vibration and absorbs minor axial thermal expansion.
-
Key downstream sectors: Petroleum refining, offshore engineering, natural gas processing, food processing, semiconductors, and air separation units.
3.Product Advantages
| Comparison Dimension | SS Stub End + Lap Joint Flange | Traditional Weld Neck Flange (Integral) |
| Material Cost | Only the stub end uses SS; the flange ring can be CS, offering significant savings | Entire flange is SS; very costly in large diameters |
| Installation Ease | Flange ring rotates freely; bolt alignment is easy; one worker can do it | Requires rotating the entire flange or pipe; difficult installation |
| Maintenance/Disassembly | Loosen bolts to separate; no hot work required | Requires cutting off welded flange; difficult and not reusable |
| Number of Welds | Only 1 butt weld required | Requires 2 fillet welds (flange neck to pipe) |
| Stress Distribution | Weld is far from sealing face; thermal stresses do not overlap | Weld is adjacent to flange neck; higher stress concentration risk |
| Nozzle Loads | No bending moment transmitted; protects equipment nozzles | Rigid connection; pipe bending moment transfers directly to equipment |
| Spare Parts Commonality | Flange rings are interchangeable across materials; fewer spare part types | Each material and size is dedicated; complex spare parts inventory |
