Forged Duplex Stainless Steel Eccentric Swaged Nipple ASTM A815 UNS S31803 2" x 1.5" SCH40 Class 3000# ASME B16.11
1. Product Description
This product is a forged eccentric swaged nipple manufactured from ASTM A815 UNS S31803 (Duplex 2205 / F51) in accordance with ASME B16.11 and MSS SP-95 standards . A swaged nipple is a forged fitting used to connect two pipes of different diameters in a straight line, with the eccentric type featuring offset centerlines where one side remains flat for horizontal piping applications . Duplex 2205 is a dual-phase stainless steel with roughly equal proportions of austenite and ferrite, offering approximately double the yield strength of standard 300-series austenitic stainless steels . This 2" x 1.5" Schedule 40, Class 3000# fitting is designed for permanent, leak-proof connections in demanding high-pressure piping systems.

3. Application / Usage
This eccentric swaged nipple is ideal for high-pressure and corrosive fluid systems:
-
Oil & Gas: Offshore platforms, subsea pipelines, high-pressure process lines
-
Chemical Processing: Chloride-containing acids, brine and seawater services
-
Desalination Plants: High-pressure reverse osmosis feed piping
-
Marine Engineering: Seawater cooling systems, firewater lines
-
Horizontal Piping Systems: Eccentric design prevents liquid accumulation or gas pockets
4. Advantages
-
Superior Strength: Yield strength is approximately double that of 316L austenitic steel, enabling thinner wall designs
-
Excellent Corrosion Resistance: PREN ~34-36 provides outstanding resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride stress corrosion cracking (SCC)
-
Eccentric Design Advantage: Offset centerlines allow installation with "flat side" down (for liquid lines) to prevent fluid accumulation, or flat side up (for gas lines) to prevent vapor pockets
-
Cost-Effective: Higher strength offsets material cost premium over austenitic grades in critical service
-
Good Weldability: Compatible with standard welding procedures; solution annealing required post-weld
5. Functions
The eccentric swaged nipple provides a permanent, pressure-rated transition between two pipes of different diameters (2" to 1.5") within a piping system . The eccentric configuration features offset centerlines with one side of the pipe wall remaining flat, which is specifically designed for horizontal pipelines to prevent liquid accumulation or air entrapment at the reduction point .
6. Installation Instructions
-
Preparation: Clean pipe ends and fitting surfaces thoroughly of all contaminants
-
Alignment: For horizontal liquid lines, install with the "flat side" facing down to prevent liquid accumulation; for gas lines, flat side up to prevent vapor pockets
-
Welding: Perform butt-weld or socket-weld following approved WPS with certified welders. For duplex materials, strict heat input control is essential
-
Post-Weld Treatment: Solution annealing at 1020-1100°C followed by rapid cooling is recommended to restore the duplex structure and corrosion resistance
7. Precautions
-
Orientation: Eccentric reducers/swaged nipples in horizontal piping must be installed with correct orientation (flat side down for liquids, flat side up for gases)
-
Ferrite Balance: Ensure proper welding procedure to maintain 40-60% ferrite-austenite microstructure
-
Temperature Limitation: Not recommended for use above 300°C or below -50°C
-
Annealing: Full solution annealing treatment is mandatory if intermetallic phase embrittlement occurs during fabrication
