UNS C70600 Copper Nickel Socket Weld Tee ASTM B151 1" Forged Pipe Fitting
UNS C70600 Copper Nickel Socket Weld Tee ASTM B151 1" Forged Pipe Fitting
1. Product Description
This product is a forged socket weld tee manufactured from UNS C70600 (90/10 Copper-Nickel alloy / CuNi 90/10) in accordance with ASTM B151 and ASME B16.11 standards. UNS C70600, also known as CuNi10Fe1.6Mn or Werkstoff Nr. 2.0872, is a wrought copper-nickel alloy containing approximately 90% copper and 10% nickel with small additions of iron and manganese to enhance corrosion resistance and mechanical properties. This 1" forged fitting features a socket weld (SW) connection, designed for permanent fillet-weld joints in small-bore piping systems (typically NPS 2 or smaller).

3. Application / Usage
This socket weld tee is ideal for seawater and corrosive fluid systems requiring high leakage integrity:
-
Marine & Shipbuilding: Seawater cooling systems, firewater lines, ballast systems, bilge lines
-
Offshore Oil & Gas: Seawater injection systems, heat exchangers
-
Desalination Plants: Reverse osmosis feed header branches, brine recirculation lines
-
Power Generation: Condenser cooling water systems, nuclear plant service water
-
Chemical Processing: Chlorine-containing wastewater pipes, heat exchanger cooling water bypass
4. Advantages
-
Superior Corrosion Resistance: Exceptional resistance to seawater, pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking
-
Biofouling Resistance: Forms a protective oxide layer that naturally resists marine biological growth
-
Socket Weld Reliability: Fillet weld provides high leak resistance, excellent performance on lines subject to vibration and thermal cycling
-
Cost-Effective: Offers a favorable balance of performance and cost compared to 70/30 CuNi or higher nickel alloys
-
Good Weldability: Readily weldable using standard GTAW processes with matching ERCuNi filler
5. Functions
The socket weld tee connects three pipe sections in a T-shaped configuration, enabling fluid to be divided from a single inlet into two branch outlets, or combined from two inlets into one outlet. The socket weld design involves inserting the pipe into the socket and applying a fillet weld around the joint, forming a permanent, leak-tight connection.
6. Installation Instructions
-
Preparation: Degrease and clean pipe ends, tee sockets, and filler metal of oil, grease, and oxidation; CuNi requires a higher degree of cleanliness than steel
-
Expansion Gap: Insert the pipe leaving a 1/16" (1.6 mm) gap between the pipe end and the socket bottom before welding
-
Welding: Use GTAW (TIG) process with matching ERCuNi filler wire (AWS A5.7); use 100% argon shielding with back purging recommended for root pass
-
Post-Weld: Remove spatter and slag; clean with stainless steel brush to leave a bright finish; no post-weld heat treatment required
7. Precautions
-
Cleanliness: Requires a higher degree of cleanliness than carbon steel fabrication to prevent weld contamination
-
Temperature Limit: Maximum service temperature ~260°C (500°F); verify system conditions for higher temperatures
-
Welding Heat Input: CuNi puddle is sluggish with an oxide film; requires appropriate amperage control and technique
-
Compatibility: Not recommended for use with nitric acid or ammonia systems
-
Socket Gap: The 1/16" expansion gap is mandatory to prevent thermal expansion cracking during service
