Copper Nickel Butt Welding Concentric Reducer 2"x1" ASTM B466 C70600 Pipe Fitting
Copper Nickel Butt Welding Concentric Reducer 2"x1" ASTM B466 C70600 Pipe Fitting
1. Product Description
This product is a butt-welding concentric reducer manufactured from UNS C70600 (90/10 Copper-Nickel alloy / CuNi 90/10) in accordance with ASTM B466 and ASME B16.9 standards. Also known as CuNi10Fe1.6Mn or Werkstoff Nr. 2.0872, this alloy consists of approximately 90% copper and 10% nickel, with small additions of iron (1.0-1.8%) and manganese to enhance strength and corrosion resistance. The 90/10 CuNi alloy has a single-phase alpha structure, providing excellent fabricability and weldability. This 2" x 1" fitting is designed for permanent butt-weld connection, enabling a smooth, concentric reduction from a larger bore to a smaller bore while maintaining a common centerline.

3. Application / Usage
This concentric reducer is ideal for seawater and corrosive fluid systems requiring pipe diameter transitions:
-
Marine & Shipbuilding: Seawater cooling systems, firewater lines, ballast systems, bilge lines
-
Offshore Oil & Gas: Seawater lift pipes, platform cooling water ring mains, seawater injection
-
Desalination Plants: Seawater intake, reverse osmosis feed distribution, brine recirculation lines
-
Power Generation: Condenser cooling water systems, heat exchangers
-
Chemical Processing: Corrosive fluid handling, hydraulic lines
4. Advantages
-
Superior Seawater Corrosion Resistance: Exceptional resistance to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking in marine environments; forms a protective oxide layer that improves with service
-
Biofouling Resistance: Naturally resists marine biological growth due to copper ion release
-
Excellent Weldability: Single-phase alpha structure enables outstanding fabrication properties without complex preheating or post-weld heat treatment
-
Cost-Effective: Widely used as an inexpensive alternative to 70/30 CuNi, titanium, or super duplex grades while delivering excellent performance
-
Smooth Flow Transition: Concentric design with common centerline ensures uniform diameter reduction with minimal turbulence and pressure drop
5. Functions
The concentric reducer connects two pipes of different diameters in a straight line while maintaining a common centerline. It reduces the pipe diameter uniformly from 2" to 1", ensuring smooth, efficient fluid flow with minimal turbulence and pressure drop. The butt-weld connection provides a permanent, leak-proof joint with high structural integrity.
6. Installation Instructions
-
Unpacking Inspection: Check for transit damage; verify markings are clear and complete
-
Surface Preparation: Clean weld bevel and adjacent area within 10mm using a stainless steel wire brush; remove all oil, grease, and oxidation
-
Alignment: Accurately align the reducer with connecting pipes ensuring concentricity. Square butt weld preparations are possible up to 3mm wall thickness
-
Tacking: Apply minimum tack welds to hold assembly in position; clean thoroughly before final welding
-
Welding: Use GTAW (TIG) process with ERCuNi filler wire (AWS A5.7). Shielding: 100% argon or Ar-He mix. Preheat recommended at 200-300°F (93-150°C). Use DCEN (Direct Current Electrode Negative). Keep tack welds to a minimum
-
Post-Weld: No post-weld heat treatment required; clean with stainless steel brush to leave a bright finish
7. Precautions
-
Cleanliness: Requires a higher degree of cleanliness than carbon steel fabrication; use dedicated stainless steel tools
-
Temperature Limit: For aqueous corrosion service, verify system conditions for temperatures above 300°C
-
Welding Heat Input: CuNi puddle is sluggish with an oxide film; requires appropriate amperage control
-
Medium Compatibility: Not recommended for use with strong oxidizing acids (e.g., nitric acid) or ammonia systems
-
Pressure Rating: Verify that the fitting's pressure class matches the system design requirements
