CUNI Threaded Hex Cap ASTM B466 UNS C715000 2" SCH40 Class 3000# ASME B16.11
CUNI Threaded Hex Cap ASTM B466 UNS C715000 2" SCH40 Class 3000# ASME B16.11
1. Product Description
This product is a threaded hex cap manufactured from UNS C71500 (70/30 Copper-Nickel alloy / CuNi 70/30) in accordance with ASTM B466 and ASME B16.11 standards. Also known as CuNi 70/30 or Werkstoff Nr. 2.0882, this alloy contains approximately 70% copper and 30% nickel, with small additions of iron and manganese to enhance strength and corrosion resistance. A hex cap is a forged pipe fitting with a hexagonal head designed to provide a threaded closure for the end of a pipe or fitting. This 2" SCH40 Class 3000# fitting features a female NPT threaded connection, providing a permanent seal for small-bore piping systems in high-pressure and corrosive service applications.

3. Application / Usage
This threaded hex cap is ideal for seawater and corrosive fluid systems requiring threaded closures:
-
Marine & Shipbuilding: Seawater piping systems, ballast lines, firewater systems
-
Offshore Oil & Gas: Platform piping, subsea applications, seawater injection lines
-
Power Generation: Condenser cooling water systems, heat exchangers
-
Chemical Processing: Chloride-containing environments where stainless steel may suffer SCC
-
Heat Exchangers: Closure for unused ports and fittings
-
Pressure Testing: Sealing pipe ends during hydrostatic testing
4. Advantages
-
Superior Corrosion Resistance: Exceptional resistance to seawater, pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride stress corrosion cracking
-
Higher Strength: 70/30 CuNi offers better strength and erosion resistance than 90/10 CuNi
-
Biofouling Resistance: Copper content naturally inhibits marine biological growth
-
Hexagonal Head Design: Provides easy installation and removal with standard wrenches
-
Threaded Convenience: No welding required; fast installation and easy disassembly for maintenance
-
High-Pressure Rating: Class 3000# suitable for demanding high-pressure applications
-
Excellent Weldability: Readily weldable using standard processes
5. Functions
The threaded hex cap provides a permanent, pressure-rated threaded closure for the end of a pipe, fitting, or valve. It is used to close off unused branch connections, provide access points for system inspection or cleaning, or serve as a test port during pressure testing. The hexagonal head allows for easy wrench tightening and removal, facilitating system maintenance and modification.
6. Installation Instructions
-
Unpacking Inspection: Check for transit damage; verify markings, dimensions, and pressure class per ASME B16.11
-
Surface Preparation: Clean pipe threads and cap threads thoroughly; remove all dirt, oil, and debris
-
Thread Sealant: Apply PTFE tape or pipe dope to male threads to ensure a reliable seal
-
Thread Engagement: Screw the cap onto the threaded pipe end by hand, then tighten with a wrench to appropriate torque
-
Avoid Over-tightening: Do not exceed recommended torque to prevent cracking the fitting body or damaging threads
-
Inspection: After installation, perform leak test per system requirements
7. Precautions
-
Cleanliness: Requires a higher degree of cleanliness than carbon steel fabrication; use dedicated tools to prevent contamination
-
Thread Compatibility: NPT, BSPT, and BSPP threads are not interchangeable. Verify thread type per system specification
-
Temperature Limit: For aqueous corrosion service, verify system conditions for temperatures above 300°C
-
Medium Compatibility: Not recommended for use with strong oxidizing acids (e.g., nitric acid) or ammonia systems
-
Bolting Torque: Do not exceed recommended torque to prevent gasket damage or flange distortion
-
Vibration Sensitivity: Threaded fittings are not recommended on lines subject to significant vibration, thermal shock, or hazardous fluid service
