CUNI Threaded Bushing ASTM B466 UNS C715000 1/2" SCH20 ASME B16.11
CUNI Threaded Bushing ASTM B466 UNS C715000 1/2" SCH20 ASME B16.11
1. Product Description
This product is a threaded hex head bushing manufactured from UNS C71500 (70/30 Copper-Nickel alloy / CuNi 70/30) in accordance with ASTM B466 and ASME B16.11 standards. Also known as CuNi 70/30 or Werkstoff Nr. 2.0882, this alloy contains approximately 70% copper and 30% nickel, with small additions of iron and manganese to enhance strength and corrosion resistance. A bushing is a pipe fitting with a male thread on the outside (smaller end) and a female thread on the inside (larger end), used to connect two pipes of different sizes in a straight line . This 1/2" SCH20 Class 3000# fitting features a hexagonal head for easy wrench installation and removal, providing a reliable threaded transition for small-bore piping systems in high-pressure and corrosive service applications .

3. Application / Usage
This threaded bushing is ideal for seawater and corrosive fluid systems requiring threaded size transitions:
-
Marine & Shipbuilding: Seawater piping systems, ballast lines, firewater systems
-
Offshore Oil & Gas: Platform piping, subsea applications, seawater injection lines
-
Power Generation: Condenser cooling water systems, heat exchangers
-
Chemical Processing: Chloride-containing environments where stainless steel may suffer SCC
-
Hydraulic and Pneumatic Systems: Reducing connections at valves and instruments
-
Heat Exchangers: Transition fittings for tube connections
4. Advantages
-
Superior Corrosion Resistance: Exceptional resistance to seawater, pitting, crevice corrosion, and chloride stress corrosion cracking; 70/30 CuNi is almost entirely resistant to stress corrosion
-
Higher Strength: 70/30 CuNi offers better strength and erosion resistance than 90/10 CuNi
-
Biofouling Resistance: Copper content naturally inhibits marine biological growth
-
Hexagonal Head Design: Provides easy installation and removal with standard wrenches
-
Threaded Convenience: No welding required; fast installation and easy disassembly for maintenance
-
High-Pressure Rating: Class 3000# suitable for demanding high-pressure applications
-
Flexible Transition: Male-to-female design enables direct pipe size reduction at connection points
5. Functions
The threaded bushing provides a reliable, leak-proof mechanical transition between two pipes of different diameters within a piping system. It features a male NPT thread on the smaller end and a female NPT thread on the larger end, allowing direct size reduction at connection points without additional adapters. The hexagonal head permits wrench tightening and removal, facilitating system maintenance and modification. For the 1/2" SCH20 Class 3000# configuration, it serves as a durable inline reducer for threaded connections requiring high-pressure integrity.
6. Installation Instructions
-
Unpacking Inspection: Check for transit damage; verify markings, dimensions, and pressure class per ASME B16.11
-
Surface Preparation: Clean both male and female threads thoroughly; remove all dirt, oil, and debris
-
Thread Sealant: Apply PTFE tape or pipe dope to the male threads (small end) and to the male threads of the pipe that will engage with the bushing's female end
-
Thread Engagement: Screw the small end (male threads) into the mating female fitting by hand, then tighten with a wrench to appropriate torque. Screw the larger pipe's male threads into the bushing's female end
-
Avoid Over-tightening: Do not exceed recommended torque to prevent cracking the fitting body
-
Inspection: After installation, perform leak test per system requirements
7. Precautions
-
Cleanliness: Requires a higher degree of cleanliness than carbon steel fabrication; use dedicated tools to prevent contamination
-
Thread Compatibility: NPT, BSPT, and BSPP threads are not interchangeable. Verify thread type per system specification
-
Temperature Limit: For aqueous corrosion service, verify system conditions for temperatures above 300°C
-
Medium Compatibility: Not recommended for use with strong oxidizing acids (e.g., nitric acid) or ammonia systems
-
Vibration Sensitivity: Threaded fittings are not recommended on lines subject to significant vibration, thermal shock, or hazardous fluid service
-
Caution: Hex head bushings of one-size reduction should not be used where they might be subject to harmful loads and forces other than internal pressures
