1. Product Description

This product is a Sockolet (socket welding branch connection fitting) manufactured from UNS C70600 (90/10 Copper-Nickel alloy / CuNi 90/10) in accordance with ASTM B466 and ASME B16.11 standards . A Sockolet is a specialized forged fitting used to create a branch connection from a larger main pipe (header) to a smaller branch pipe. Unlike standard tees, the Olet family of fittings is shaped to match the curvature of the run pipe and contains internal reinforcement, making it stronger and better suited for high-stress applications . UNS C70600, also known as CuNi 90/10 or CuNi10Fe1.6Mn, contains approximately 90% copper and 10% nickel with iron and manganese additions, offering an effective balance of strength, corrosion resistance, and cost-effectiveness . This 4" Class 3000# fitting features a socket weld (SW) connection, designed for permanent fillet-weld joints in high-pressure and corrosive service piping systems .

5. Functions

The Sockolet creates a reinforced branch connection from a larger main pipe to a smaller branch pipe (4"). It is welded directly onto the run pipe after cutting a hole, providing a strong, leak-tight junction for fluid diversion. The socket weld connection involves inserting the pipe into the socket and applying a fillet weld around the joint, forming a permanent, pressure-rated connection suitable for high-temperature and high-pressure environments .

6. Installation Instructions

  1. Unpacking Inspection: Check for transit damage; verify markings, dimensions, and pressure class per ASME B16.11

  2. Surface Preparation: Clean the run pipe surface and Sockolet socket interior thoroughly; remove all oil, grease, and debris

  3. Marking: Mark the exact drilling location on the run pipe per specification

  4. Drilling: Drill the run pipe at the marked location to the required diameter

  5. Fitting Placement: Position the Sockolet over the drilled hole, ensuring proper alignment with the run pipe curvature

  6. Welding: Insert the branch pipe into the Sockolet socket leaving a 1/16" (1.6 mm) expansion gap. Perform fillet welding around both the Sockolet-to-run pipe and branch pipe-to-Sockolet joints using approved WPS with certified welders. Preheating generally not required; interpass temperature should be maintained ≤150°C. No post-weld heat treatment is required for CuNi alloys due to the single-phase alpha structure 

  7. Post-Weld: Clean weld area; perform NDT (PT/MT) as per project requirements

  8. Commissioning: During commissioning, ensure the system is flushed with clean seawater or fresh water to establish a protective film. The minimum flow rate should not be below 0.5-1 m/s in seawater containing suspended matter 

7. Precautions

  • Cleanliness: Requires a higher degree of cleanliness than carbon steel fabrication; use dedicated tools to prevent contamination. The introduction of solid matter should be avoided by installation of strainers or screens 

  • Socket Gap: The 1/16" (1.6 mm) expansion gap is mandatory to prevent thermal expansion cracking during service

  • Temperature Limit: For aqueous corrosion service, verify system conditions for temperatures above 300°C. Long-term general corrosion rates of UNS C70600 have been found to continuously decrease with time of exposure 

  • Medium Compatibility: Not recommended for use with strong oxidizing acids (e.g., concentrated nitric acid) or ammonia systems 

  • Commissioning: For intermittent flow systems, seawater should be replaced by oxygenated seawater within 4-5 days to avoid putrefaction 

  • Biofouling Note: If cathodically protected, the biofouling resistance of cupronickel is decreased
