ASTM B861 Titanium Grade 2 Swage Reducing Nipple 2"x1" SCH10S x SCH40S
1. Product Description
This product is a swage reducing nipple manufactured from Titanium Grade 2 (UNS R50400) in accordance with ASTM B861 and ASME B16.11 standards. A swage reducing nipple is a forged pipe fitting used to connect two pipes of different diameters in a straight line, available in either concentric (aligned centerlines) or eccentric (offset centerlines) configurations. Titanium Grade 2 is unalloyed titanium with standard oxygen content, known as the “workhorse” of commercially pure titanium grades. This 2" x 1" fitting features a plain/beweled end for butt-weld connection on the large end and a socket weld or plain end on the small end, designed for permanent installation in demanding corrosive service applications. The overall length is approximately 11 inches (279.4 mm).

3. Application / Usage
This swage reducing nipple is ideal for corrosive environments requiring high strength-to-weight ratio:
-
Chemical Processing: Chloride-containing process streams, heat exchangers, piping systems handling oxidizing acids
-
Marine & Offshore: Seawater piping systems, desalination plants, shipbuilding
-
Power Generation: Condenser tubing, cooling water systems
-
Aerospace & Medical: High-purity and demanding service applications
-
Oil & Gas: Subsea piping, chemical injection lines
4. Advantages
-
Superior Corrosion Resistance: Exceptional resistance to seawater, pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking; Titanium Grade 2 is equally corrosion resistant to Grade 1 but slightly stronger
-
High Strength-to-Weight Ratio: Approximately 60% the density of steel with comparable strength
-
Excellent Weldability & Formability: Titanium Grade 2 possesses good weldability, ductility, and formability
-
Biofouling Resistance: Inert surface resists marine biological attachment
-
Good Fabricability: Can be manufactured from seamless pipe or bar material
-
Cost-Effective: Commercially pure titanium offers a favorable balance of performance and cost compared to higher alloyed titanium grades
5. Functions
The swage reducing nipple provides a permanent, pressure-rated transition between two pipes of different diameters (2" to 1") within a piping system. The concentric configuration maintains aligned centerlines for smooth flow transition, while the eccentric configuration features offset centerlines for horizontal piping to prevent liquid accumulation or vapor pockets. For the 2" x 1" SCH10S x SCH40S configuration, it serves as a durable inline reducer for critical corrosive service applications requiring welding.
6. Installation Instructions
-
Unpacking Inspection: Check for transit damage; verify markings, dimensions, and material certification per ASME B16.11
-
Surface Preparation: Clean the weld bevel and adjacent area using dedicated titanium tools; remove all oil, grease, and contaminants. Titanium requires a higher degree of cleanliness than steel to prevent contamination
-
Alignment: Accurately align the nipple with connecting pipes; for eccentric designs, ensure correct orientation (flat side down for liquids, flat side up for gases)
-
Tack Welding: Apply minimum tack welds to hold the fitting in position; clean thoroughly before final welding
-
Welding: Perform welding following approved WPS with certified welders. Use GTAW (TIG) process with matching titanium filler metal (Grade 2) . Strict inert gas shielding (argon) is mandatory for both the weld pool and root side to prevent oxidation. Preheat generally not required; interpass temperature should be maintained ≤150°C . No post-weld heat treatment is typically required for Grade 2 titanium
-
Post-Weld: Clean weld area; perform NDT (PT/MT, UT) as per project requirements
-
Hydrotest: Test pressure = 1.5 × design pressure; ambient temperature not below 5°C
7. Precautions
-
Cleanliness: Requires a higher degree of cleanliness than carbon steel fabrication. Titanium is highly reactive with oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen at elevated temperatures; adequate inert gas shielding is essential during welding
-
Temperature Limitation: Grade 2 titanium is not recommended for use above 315°C (600°F) in oxidizing environments due to accelerated oxidation; for elevated temperature service, verify system conditions
-
Contamination Prevention: Use dedicated tools for titanium to prevent iron contamination, which can cause localized corrosion
-
Galvanic Corrosion: Titanium is noble; avoid direct contact with less noble metals (e.g., carbon steel, aluminum) in electrolytic environments unless electrically isolated
-
Thread Compatibility: If threaded ends are specified, verify NPT, BSPT, or BSPP thread type per system specification
-
Quality Testing: PMI per ASTM E1476, UT per ASTM A388, PT/MT per ASTM E165/E709 recommended
8. Shipping & Delivery
