Product Description
Cryogenic LNG Concentric Reducer — 254SMO, 6 x 4 Inch

LNG piping runs at minus 162 °C, and the fittings must remain tough at that temperature rather than turning brittle. This concentric reducer is produced in 254SMO (UNS S31254), a high-molybdenum austenitic stainless steel with a PREN above 43, and it is impact tested at minus 196 °C to cover the full cryogenic range, including loading line boil-off conditions.

Cryogenic service also punishes anything with a sharp geometry change, so the size head is formed with a generous transition radius and the bore is ground smooth after pickling to remove the laps that would act as stress raisers. Where the specification calls for a nickel-base alloy instead, the same concentric reducer is produced in Inconel 625 in 6 x 4 inch for the highest chloride and fatigue duty.

Design, Inspection and Application Highlights
  • Cryogenic toughness: the austenitic structure of 254SMO keeps impact energy high at minus 196 °C, so the concentric reducer does not embrittle at LNG temperature.
  • Chloride resistance: a PREN above 43 suits coastal terminals and splash-zone areas where 316L would pit within a few years.
  • Smooth transition: the internal radius and ground bore reduce stress concentration at the size change, which is the point where cryogenic fatigue cracks normally start.
  • Welding package: a low heat input procedure and matching filler recommendation are supplied with the order so the LNG concentric reducer can be welded without field trials.
  • Application fit: LNG receiving terminals, loading arms, tanker manifolds, cold boxes, air separation plants and liquid nitrogen distribution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why is 254SMO used rather than 304L for LNG piping?

304L becomes marginal where LNG is combined with coastal chlorides and thermal cycling. 254SMO with 6 percent molybdenum keeps both cryogenic toughness and pitting resistance, so the concentric reducer covers the whole duty.

Is Inconel 625 available in the same size?

Yes. The 6 x 4 inch concentric reducer can be produced in Inconel 625 when the project specifies a nickel-base alloy, with longer lead time and higher cost.

What impact energy is guaranteed at minus 196 °C?

A minimum average of 40 J on three specimens, with no single value below 28 J, tested from the same heat as the delivered fitting.

How is the bore prepared for cryogenic service?

After forming and pickling, the inside surface of the concentric reducer is ground to remove laps and heat tint, then re-passivated so the roughness and the passive film are both controlled.

Can the reducer be supplied with a third-party witness test?

Yes. Witnessing of the impact test and the dimensional inspection by a nominated inspection body can be arranged when the LNG concentric reducer order is placed.

Send the design temperature, medium and chloride level, and we will confirm whether 254SMO, Inconel 625 or a super duplex grade is the right choice for your cryogenic concentric reducer.
