ASME B16.11 Forged Pipe Fittings Carbon Steel Stainless Steel Threaded Socket Weld 3000 6000
1. Product Description
Forged pipe fittings are manufactured from solid steel bar or billet through a forging process, then machined to final dimensions. Unlike wrought or butt-weld fittings, forged fittings are designed for small-bore, high-pressure piping systems and are available with socket weld (SW) or threaded (NPT/BSP) connections. Common types include elbows (45°/90°), tees (equal/reducing), couplings (full/half), unions, caps, plugs, bushings, and crosses. Manufactured to ASME B16.11, they provide superior strength and leak-proof performance in demanding applications.
2. Key Specifications

-
Manufacturing Process: Forged from solid bar, then machined
3. Applications
Forged fittings are widely used in small-bore, high-pressure piping systems across oil and gas, petrochemical refineries, power generation plants, shipbuilding, chemical and fertilizer plants, and high-pressure utility systems. They are the standard choice for pipe sizes NPS 2 and below where socket weld or threaded connections are required.
4. Product Advantages
-
Forged construction provides higher strength and density compared to cast fittings
-
Suitable for high-pressure applications up to Class 9000
-
Compact design ideal for confined spaces and small-bore piping
-
Socket weld and threaded options allow flexibility in installation
-
Available in a wide range of materials for corrosive and high-temperature service
-
Dimensional consistency per ASME B16.11 ensures interchangeability
5. Product Functions
Forged fittings serve to change flow direction (elbows), branch or combine flow (tees/crosses), connect pipe sections (couplings/unions), terminate lines (caps/plugs), or reduce pipe size (bushings/reducing fittings). Socket weld fittings provide a strong fillet-welded joint, while threaded fittings allow for disassembly and maintenance without hot work.
6. Instruction for Use
-
Verify fitting type, size, pressure class, and material match the piping specification.
-
For socket weld fittings: insert pipe into socket, pull back approximately 1/16” (1.6 mm) to allow for thermal expansion, then apply fillet weld around the circumference.
-
For threaded fittings: apply PTFE tape or thread sealant to male threads, tighten to achieve a leak-tight seal. Do not over-torque.
-
Clean all surfaces before installation; remove oil, rust, and debris.
-
Inspect threads and socket bores for damage before assembly.
-
Perform pressure testing after installation as required.
7. Precautions
-
Do not subject forged fittings to impact or drop during storage and handling.
-
Keep stainless steel fittings away from contact with carbon steel to prevent galvanic corrosion.
-
Ensure the piping system is depressurized and drained before installation or maintenance.
-
Use appropriate welding procedures and filler materials matched to the fitting grade.
-
Do not use damaged or deformed fittings; inspect threads and sockets for cracks.
-
For threaded fittings in vibration-prone services, consider additional locking measures.
-
Verify material certificates (MTC) include heat number, chemical analysis, and mechanical properties.
