Titanium-stabilised grades only deliver their elevated-temperature strength when the heat treatment is performed correctly. This stainless steel reducer is formed from WP321H plate, solution annealed at 1050 °C and water quenched, which returns the titanium carbide to solution and leaves a structure that resists sensitisation in the 500 °C to 800 °C band.
Air cooling after hot forming is the usual shortcut — and it is also the reason many 321H fittings fail an intergranular corrosion test on site. Each stainless steel reducer in this series is quenched, then sampled for ASTM A262 Practice E before dispatch, and the heat treatment chart is filed with the certificate.

- Correct anneal cycle: solution annealing at 1050 °C followed by water quenching is what separates a serviceable 321H stainless steel reducer from one that cracks after two thermal cycles.
- Stabilised chemistry: titanium at five times the carbon content ties up carbon as TiC, so chromium stays in solution and the weld zone keeps its corrosion resistance.
- Verified by test: every lot passes ASTM A262 Practice E, and the heat treatment chart with furnace number and soak time is supplied.
- Dimensional stability: the reducer is supported on a fixture through the quench, so the H dimension and roundness hold after the thermal cycle.
- Application fit: steam superheat lines, exhaust manifolds, furnace ducting, heat exchanger shells and annealing furnace piping.
Air cooling is too slow above 900 °C, so chromium carbides can precipitate at the grain boundaries. Water quenching suppresses that, which is why the solution annealed condition is specified for 321H service.
Yes. 347H is niobium stabilised and receives the same solution anneal and quench cycle. Both grades are produced for the same high-temperature piping packages.
About 800 °C for continuous service, depending on the design code. Above that, the allowable stress drops sharply and a higher alloy becomes necessary.
Yes. ASTM A262 Practice E is run on a sample from each heat after heat treatment, and the result is reported in the 3.1 certificate.
In a plywood case with the bevel protected and the body strapped, since a 20 inch stainless steel reducer is light enough to be damaged by point loading rather than by weight.
Tell us the design temperature and the piping class, and we will confirm the heat treatment cycle and testing regime for the stainless steel reducer before quoting.
