Q235B/20# Seamless Carbon Steel Pipe Equivalent to ASTM A106 Gr.B Schedule 40
1.Product Description
API 5L carbon steel pipe is a carbon and low-alloy steel welded and seamless line pipe designed, manufactured, and inspected in accordance with API Specification 5L, Line Pipe, for long-distance high-pressure transmission of oil, natural gas, water, and various chemical media. First issued in 1924 and refined through nearly a hundred revisions, this specification stands as the most authoritative technical standard in the global line pipe industry.
Steel grades cover Grade B, X42, X52, X60, X65, X70, and X80, where the number following “X” denotes the minimum yield strength in ksi (e.g., X65 indicates a minimum yield strength of 65,000 psi, approximately 448 MPa). Manufacturing processes include seamless (SMLS), Longitudinal Submerged Arc Welded (LSAW), Spiral Submerged Arc Welded (SSAW), High-Frequency Electric Resistance Welded (ERW), and Electric Fusion Welded (EFW). Quality levels are classified as PSL1 and PSL2, with PSL2 imposing stricter chemical composition tolerances, impact toughness requirements, and non-destructive testing coverage, specifically engineered for high-pressure, sour, low-temperature, and offshore applications.
The outside diameter supply ranges from 10.3mm small-bore pipes up to 2032mm extra-large-diameter pipes. Wall thickness is flexibly matched to design pressure and installation conditions, and single-pipe lengths are available in fixed or random sizes, fully accommodating the diverse requirements of various engineering projects.
2. Product Applications
API 5L carbon steel pipes serve across the entire oil and gas industry chain, with specific applications including:
-
Upstream Production: Wellhead high-pressure gas gathering lines, oilfield water and polymer injection lines, and multiphase produced-fluid pipelines, withstanding corrosive media and cyclic loads from downhole fluids.
-
Midstream Transmission: Onshore and subsea long-distance oil/gas trunk lines, inter-provincial pipeline interconnects, and process piping within compressor stations and metering stations.
-
Downstream Processing: Feed and effluent lines for atmospheric/vacuum distillation, catalytic cracking, and hydrocracking units in refineries; process media pipelines in chemical plants; and distribution branches at product depots.
-
Municipal and Industrial: Urban high-pressure gas distribution networks, large-scale inter-basin water diversion projects, district heating mains, and power plant circulating cooling water systems.
-
Structural Engineering: Load-bearing members such as offshore jacket platforms, bridge piles, large-span steel plant structures, and heavy equipment foundations.
3. Product Advantages
-
Precise Grade-to-Service Matching: Grade B and X42 suit low-pressure, normal-temperature general transmission. X52 through X60 achieve the optimal balance between cost-effectiveness and mechanical performance, making them the preferred choice for medium-pressure pipelines. X65 and X70 combine high strength with superior crack-arrest toughness, serving as the standard configuration for high-pressure, large-diameter long-haul trunk lines. X80 and above support wall thickness reduction through higher strength, offering viable solutions for deepwater, arctic, and high-throughput projects while effectively reducing steel consumption and transportation/installation costs.
-
Scientifically Matched Manufacturing Processes: Small diameters preferentially adopt seamless or ERW processes for high dimensional accuracy and cost control. Medium-to-large diameter trunk lines are dominated by LSAW, featuring short longitudinal welds, low defect probability, and excellent crack-arrest performance. Extra-large diameters with lower pressure ratings select SSAW to achieve high-flow transmission at lower fabrication costs. Each process is equipped with corresponding non-destructive testing protocols to ensure reliable weld quality.
-
Specialized Certification for Harsh Environments: For sour oil and gas fields containing hydrogen sulfide, pipes can be supplied in compliance with NACE MR0175, featuring ultra-low sulfur and phosphorus (S≤0.002%, P≤0.015%) and strict hardness control (≤250 HV10), supplemented by mandatory HIC and SSC tests to ensure no stress cracking occurs in wet H₂S environments. For arctic regions, grain refinement and quenching-tempering heat treatment guarantee stable impact energy performance at -45℃.
-
Superior Field Weldability: PSL2 grades strictly control carbon equivalent (CEV, X65≤0.42%), reducing preheating temperature requirements and post-weld heat treatment needs. Compatible with various welding techniques including SMAW, GMAW, and SAW, this significantly shortens construction schedules and lowers installation costs.
-
Full-Process Traceability: From steelmaking continuous casting, rolling, forming, and welding to non-destructive testing, every critical production step is subject to on-line monitoring and parameter recording. Pipe end markings are uniquely linked to electronic mill test certificates, enabling precise backtracking to coil batches, welding parameters, and inspection results for any pipe segment during the operational period, providing data support for engineering maintenance.
-
Long-Term Corrosion Protection and Low Lifecycle Cost: The pipe substrate is compatible with various external anti-corrosion coatings including FBE, 3LPE, and 3LPP. When coupled with cathodic protection, the buried service life reaches no less than 50 years, significantly reducing maintenance and replacement costs during the operational phase.
